Board Governance Series: Article 2- The Administrative Duties of an Executive Director
About
Whenever the Next Level Now (NLN) Collaborative team provides technical assistance (TA) at workforce conferences across the nation, one of the major main pain points is Board Governance. The winds of change are blowing wild and free across the national workforce system at this moment, and there is a strong desire for advice and resources in this particular area. Many Executive Directors (EDs) in the system are retiring and new hires in this role are voracious for information.
One such example came to the NLN team in January 2024.We received an intensive technical request for guidance and resources from an ED of a small workforce board. We provided resources from the list below, and also made a Peer-to-Peer connection with another ED of a similar sized board, in order to discuss duties, board organization, and training opportunities. As an ED, you are responsible for your staff, recruiting board members, the structural setup of the board and creating champions for the workforce system, while also ensuring that communication is transparent and strategic partnerships are at the forefront of conversations.
In this second installment of the Board Governance series, we will discuss administrative responsibilities for an ED of a local workforce board (LWB). Below are a few of the universal resources which we typically push out to new EDs during our NLN TA opportunities, with the goal of helping EDs take their board and staff to the "next level."
