Board Governance Series: Article 1- New Board Member Responsibilities and Engagement
About
The Next Level Now (NLN) Collaborative team often provides customized technical assistance to Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) staff and board members on a variety of topics. NLN presented a Board Governance training to state board members in February 2024, using many of the universal resources found below, in an effort to provide boards promising practices on effective and strategic operational strategies.
1. Before you determine how your board needs to effectively streamline their activities or achieve certain goals, you need to understand your role on the board and why your engagement is vital. These resources give you a broad overview of the workforce system and the overall structure of the boards.
2. Discussing methods for the board's role in how to engage businesses and bring them to the table and how to align strategies and goals across various workforce partner organizations is crucial. The following resources will be helpful:
- Advancing Vision, Creating Strategy, and Partnerships
- ETA Local Board Governance Training - High-impact, Strategic Boards
3. High performing boards utilize data for informed decision making and align their goals with workforce system partners. NLN uses the following resources in intensive training for state and local boards to help them understand how to drive strategic action, creating successful outcomes.
To ensure that this information is accessible to all, NLN will be posting a Board Governance series of resources on our Community of Practice (CoP) over the next few months. This is the first post of the series and Article 2 has been released as well.
