Supervising Career Coaches Series: Article 1-Leadership for Transformational Coaching
About
Following the inaugural Career Coaching cohort in the fall of 2023, the Next Level Now (NLN) Collaborative reviewed the collective feedback and decided to host another training program, this time with a different audience in mind.
This second cohort would target supervisors of career coaches within American Job Centers (AJCs) and follow a “train the trainer” style format, providing promising practices for increasing capacity as supervisors, methods for effectively leading teams, and offering strategies for taking transactional coaching methods to transformational interactions with clients.
The “Train the Trainer” cohort concluded in August 2024 and offered a multitude of resources for the 70+ participants. To ensure the valuable information shared with cohort attendees is accessible to the entire workforce system, we will be posting a multi-part “Supervising Career Coaches Series" on our Community of Practice (CoP) over the next few months, covering the topics discussed in the cohort and providing the corresponding resources. This is the first article in the series. We encourage you to check back in periodically as additional articles are posted!
Transformational Career Coaching Culture:
- National Career Development Association (NCDA) 2024 Code of Ethics
- NCDA's Mental Health Resources: Supervisors should be aware of the signs of mental health distress, train their staff to recognize the symptoms in clients, and encourage an open-minded and encouraging coaching dialogue.
Leadership Models and Methods:
- Leadership Style Test: Curious to know if you have innate leadership skills? Set aside 15 minutes and take this assessment.
- Hersey-Blanchard Situational Leadership Model: This suggests that no single leadership style is better than another, but that leadership styles should be tailored based on the team and their individual abilities.
- 8 Steps of Leading Change: Dr. Kotter’s famous linear trajectory for effectively “leading change.”
