Transformational Career Coaching Strategies
About
The world of work is ever changing, and adaptations to career coaching must be fluid and evolving as well. To that end, the Next Level Now (NLN) Collaborative hosted an inaugural Career Coaching Cohort during the fall of 2023, designed to provide strategies and resources to move career coaches in the public workforce system from transactional to transformational coaching methods.
Below you will find resources related to discussions held within the Cohort. These creative strategies will apply to career coaches just starting out in their role within American Job Centers and will also enhance the processes being used by veteran coaches.
Approaches to Transformational Coaching:
Transactional coaching was a common practice in years past. The career coach provided information to the job seeker, not tailoring information based on their wants or needs. Today, we know better; the transformational coaching model focuses on the coach building a trusted relationship with the customer, ensuring that any information shared is customized specifically to the individual. Below you will find resources to assist in incorporating these techniques within your client base.
Assisting Historically Marginalized Populations with Barriers to Employment:
Traditional career coaching approached barriers to employment as something that should be removed to immediately “go to work.” While obtaining employment is important, career coaches shouldn’t use that as bait when working with customers who historically have employment barriers. Career coaches can utilize other tools in their arsenal to motivate their clients to overcome challenges.

Focus on Career Exploration:
The importance of career exploration within the world of career coaching cannot be overstated. The process of building out a career plan, that includes career pathways, and helping the client connect the dots to their potential niche, will ultimately lead to career fulfillment and overall happiness for the client.
