A Renewed Focus on Youth Apprenticeship and Increasing Opportunity

About

Apprenticeship is an ideal “earn and learn” avenue for youth to build in-demand technical skills in a mentored, hands-on environment. As the Next Level Now (NLN) Collaborative team speaks to various states and U.S. territories regarding the Registered Apprenticeship (RA) system, alongside the RA Technical Assistance Center of Excellence (CoE) with their extensive subject matter expertise, the topic often turns to creating youth apprenticeship programs and pipelines for future work.

For example, NLN, in partnership with CoE, is providing ongoing, customized virtual and on-site technical assistance to a state workforce association, to assist them in their goal of having 60,000 high school students complete a RA program prior to graduation. NLN is fortunate to have a strong partnership and referral system with CoE, as we leverage their knowledge of RA and scaling strategic partnerships to accelerate the adoption of RA and improve alignment within the nation’s workforce system.

According to the Department of Labor (DOL), fewer than 0.2% of young people ages 16–24 choose to participate in a Registered Apprenticeship (RA) program. To help change this statistic and emphasize the benefits of RA, employers, workforce professionals, stakeholders, and partners are working together to raise awareness of apprenticeship career opportunities for youth while also highlighting the diverse talent and skills they bring to the workforce.

Below you will find universal resources to aid you in your quest to strengthen the RA pathway for youth, which will ultimately provide them opportunities for growth, training, and overall success.
