Youth Apprenticeship Initiatives

About

Youth apprenticeship initiatives engaging both in school and out of school youth are growing nationwide. They provide learning which is structured around knowledge, skills, and competencies that lead to self-sustainable careers.

Below are a few best practices of youth apprenticeship success stories.

  • The ARCH program in San Joaquin County, California is a high school youth RA program for juniors or seniors. Students complete dual enrollment courses related to their occupation through the local community college (San Joaquin Delta College) and complete paid, part-time with employers participating in the ARCH program. Students are recommended by their CTE Centers and go on post-graduation to work as full-time apprentices while completing their remaining instruction; course credit can be applied toward a college degree at a 4-year university. For more information, go to San Joaquin County High School Apprenticeship Initiative | Apprenticeship Reaching Career Horizons (ARCH).
  • Apprenticeship Maryland is a youth apprenticeship program for junior and senior high school students, ages 16 and up, designed to lead to sustainable employment and further education based on career pathways in manufacturing and Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) occupations or other occupations within the CTE Career Clusters. Youth apprentices complete at least 450 hours of paid, supervised work-based training with a participating employer and at least one year of related instruction. Currently 21 Maryland county school systems participate in the program. For more information go to Youth Apprenticeship Videos - Maryland Apprenticeship and Training Program (MATP) | Maryland Department of Labor.
